Hi and welcome. I'm Ryan Earley and this is your new daily destination for all things PERS and personal finance right here in Mississippi.

For the nearly 350,000 public employees, retirees, and beneficiaries who are members of the Public Employees Retirement System of Mississippi, otherwise known as PERS, this channel is for you. I know the PERS system can feel complex, as a PERS member myself. You've got questions about Tier 1, 2, 3, 4, and now Tier 5. You're wondering about vesting requirements. Is it four years or eight years for me?

What about that all-important retirement formula based on your last four years of highest earnings? And that's just the pension. You're also balancing things like budgeting on a state salary, understanding your state employee benefits like health insurance and personal and sick leave, planning for big goals like saving for a child's college education or getting out of debt, the ins and outs of Medicare and Social Security as you approach retirement age, and making sure you're getting the most out of your hard-earned money.
